Vision

We strive for wholeness in the management of our land and marine resources, bringing understanding and healing to regain a stable and productive ecosystem. Only in this way can human livelihoods and wildlife improve generating the foundations of a happy, healthy, peaceful and just society.

Goal:

RMSN has set a futuristic goal that is structured into three separate parts to be seen in all Somali regions by 2002 and beyond.
Quality of life (Desired), Peace, justice, prosperity, human rights, freedom, health, education, wealth, solidarity, wealth, self reliance and sustainability.
Forms of production (necessary to support the defined quality of life), clean food, peaceful atmosphere, clean water, negotiation, reconciliation, sustainable natural resources, understanding, openness, respecting rights for all, good education, common interest, infra-structure, courts and job opportunities.


Future landscape descriptions (to support forms of production),
Natural landscape: plentiful, clean, high quality, covered Soil service, functioning watersheds; clean oceans and productive, clean rivers, healthy forest and rangelands, multi-aged and diversified vegetation, livestock are present; soil is fertile humus and sustainable resources.
Human Landscape: Healthy, skilled, creative, happy, supportive, accountable, dynamic, initiative, trustworthy, resourceful, self-responsible, drug-free motivated, flexible, knowledgeable, and open-minded.
Economic landscape: Diversification of wealth base, Environmental friendly industries, exports, technology, profitability, infrastructure, fair laws and analytical thinkers people.

Background:

As one of the RMSN founders ASAL works biggest and remotest region of Somalia whereas some of its districts are land and sea locked. The larger Network was established in order to improve the depleting natural resources of Somalia through a system of NGOs and teams working towards the same natural resource priorities throughout the country. It is the only environmental and pastoral focused network in Somalia thus far. RMSN has succeeded in overcoming the barriers of tribalism, regionalism, and even UN zoning divides in order to serve all Somali regions.

The RMSN consists 14 NGOs on regional basis, delivering holistic resource management messages to all levels of pastoral, semi-pastoral, fisheries, government agencies and the grassroots in the main towns to mobilize and encourage Somali communities to protect and sustain ably manage their local resources.

SOURCE OF FUNDINGS:

Till now NOVIB is the main source of fund.

NETWORKS AND AFFILIATION:

ASAL is registered in Puntland as an organization with the number of GGF/GB/08/06/2001.
It has strong relationship with national Ministry of Agriculture, livestock and Environment (All RMSN organizations, Talawadag network, Puntland food security network, EPA, COC of Somali NGOs/Networks, WOCA and PULPA) organizations, regional (Hope For the Horn of Ethiopia, SECS of Sudan, PERSGA and NYDA of Uganda) and international (RMI, Resource Management International, NOVIB of Netherlands

WORK EXPERIENCE:

The areas that the team has experienced the followings in the past 6 yrs:

1. Applicability of “Holistic Management” in improving Somalia’s depleting resources.
2. Awareness can play a significant role to sensitize local the situation they facing to.
3. Demonstration results have proved positive with minimum inputs.
4. The need of funds diversification to be able constant monitoring and activities implementations

5. Since first imposition of livestock in 1997, deforestation and charcoal burning has reached its highest peak due to unemployment and seeking source of income.

6. Importances of cross visits and updating skills needed by the ASAL members.

INTERVENTIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SECTOR:

  • Establishment of demo sites in degraded areas for improvement test.
  • Conducting massive awareness towards pastoralists and Villagers
  • Conducting community trainings
  • Conducting field assessments to understand underlying causes of deterioration.
  • Contributing Charcoal Based Conflict, Case studies
  • Providing training to newly joined RMSN teams/organizations
  • Providing training to Regional partners {HFTH and SECS)
  • Wildlife safeguarding activities
  • Provision of text book to Qardo school teachers
  • Developed training guideline for target beneficiaries.

  • Wood based energy dynamics. Cooperated with Education Training Consultant (ETC) from IUCN 1998.
  • Resource based Conflict case studies
