Mission statement :

We promote the development of clean, healthy and sustainable environment through education

Sources of funding :

NOVIB, GECPD

Networks and affiliations : RMSN

Areas of operations : Mudug Region

Environmental Education Material:

EET produced “Degan Jire” News Letter, booklets on environmental education and environmental poems-songs –plays.

Background/ Context:

The EET formulated its objectives against the background/ context given below.

Puntland survived the devastating civil war that destroyed most of Somalia regions; the relative peace enjoyed led to an increase of the livestock and to a high number of people displaced to Puntland from South, changing dramatically the demographic composition of the population. Both livestock and human population increase ended up putting a greater pressure on land and natural resources. The most damaging action to the environment is the commercialization of charcoal and its export business, mostly in Sanaag and Bari regions. There are no yet feasible programs for the full development of alternative sources of renewable energy, to counter, for example, the trend to use charcoal as the only domestic supply source for cooking energy, and to that matter as to satisfy the ever growing community demand for energy consumption.

Because of the increased number of livestock in Puntland, and the reduced carrying capacity of the land, coupled with scarcity of rain, the deterioration of environment has further risen to unprecedented level. The construction of extensive and mis-planned water tanks (Barkad) that harvest rain water for private and commercial use at all villages and nomadic settlements have also doubled the devastation of pastoral environment and the rational use of land based resources. Tree planting activities, as an answer to the relentless depletion of the vegetation, are inexistent except for sporadic individual initiatives.

In the urban settings, the importation of hundred of tones of plastic bags that are spread everywhere, the uncollected garbage, lack of sufficient water for household use, and absence of efficient administration, have also contributed to the deterioration of the environment in towns and villages.

The lack of clear policy and financing in addressing the management of natural resources, in addition to the limited community mobilization and awareness, the high illiteracy rate in community, especially in women enforces the apathy of the people to act positively on the environment and NRM.

In addition to this unpromising picture, the absence of a national education curriculum that deals with how to take care of the environment at all levels will make the tasks of environmental challenges ahead not very easy to cope with.
EET Objectives:

  • To continue environmental education program on natural resource management within the primary and adult education program (improvement of existing materials - curriculum/ syllabi)
  • To strengthen and develop educational material and information systems (radio programs, development of audio materials, songs, poems and drama) on Natural Resource Management.
  • To collaborate with community leaders and schools for environmental education and tree planting and training teachers, school managers, school committees on the importance, protection and optimum management of natural resource,
  • To train secondary school students with the collaboration of students/ youth organizations and committees
  • To expose school children, community elders and leaders, women's groups, youth, local administration officials and political leadership to the gravity of the environmental degradation both at urban and pastoral level, and the ways to protect environment.
  • To planting trees, distributing them and preparing for the annual Green Day campaign on 17 April every year
  • To prepare for the environmental week on 25 June every year
  • To organize training on awareness raising on the use and protection of water barkado, for the community leaders, elders and women groups for all three districts and seven villages of North Mudug
  • To prepare training awareness of garbage disposal, and the danger of used plastic bags
  • To prepare advocacy program against commercialization of charcoal and its export business through radio, forums, and articles to be published.
  • To establish effective networking with all the RMSN member-organisationsand other environmental concerned organizations
  • To organized environmental education seminars, workshops and forums
  • To establish at Harfo Village a site (plot) for tree planting for extension and demonstration purposes
